Why Visit la Isla Mujeres in Mexico?

Isla Mujeres, (Island of Women), is a peaceful paradise just a short ferry ride from Cancun. It is beloved for :

-Playa Norte- One of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico

-Snorkeling & diving

-Charming Town - full of colorful streets, local shops, and cozy cafés

-Golf cart rentals- a fun and easy way to tour the Island

Punta Sur _ stunning ocean views and Mayan ruins

--

Ixchel is honored as the guardian of the island and is often depicted as a powerful feminine figure, sometime as a young woman and other times as an older, wise woman - representing the full cycle of life.

Statue of Ixchel ( pronounced ee-shell) - Anciant Maya Goddess associated with the moon, fertility and childbirth, medecine and healing, weaving and rain.

--

As you see here, the Ixchel Statue of Isla Mujeres stands near Punta Sur, the southernmost point of Isla Mujeres, on the cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea. This is not just a beautiful viewpoint. It is considered a sacred site by the Maya. This is also significant because it is the first place in Mexico to see the sunrise, adding to its spiritual energy.

2. Option #2-- DIY Day Trip to Isla Mujeres

--

PROS-

-Full Control- Set your own schedule and choose exactly what you want to do and see.

-Cheaper Overall - Round-trip ticket cost around $20 and you can eat and explore on your own budget.

-More Authentic Experience - You can discover local spots, street food, and beaches away from the tour crowds.

-Freedom to explore: You can rent your own golf cart, and explore the entire island at your own pace.

-Great for multi-generational families - catering to younger or elderly parents who have different needs.

--

CONS-

-More Effort : You will need to research ferry times, transportation to the ferry dock, and plan your itinerary.

-Language barrier - Some vendors and locations may not speak English well, although it is our job to at least communicate in the local language.

-No guide - Unless you hire a private guide, you don't have access to insider information.

-Logistics - If something goes wrong (Ferry delays, sold out golf carts), it is on you to fix it.

--

I personally opted for Option 2- Because I traveled with my elderly parents ages 75 & 81, it was more convenient to plan out our day trip to Isla Mujeres and catered to their needs. We were free and were able to take our time and slow down as needed.

--

I will go more into details on what we did and which Ferry we chose to cross over to Isla Mujeres.

3. Pro-Tip : A Hybrid Option might be smart.

Golf car Rental.

Some travelers choose a middle ground- Book your ferry in advance and rent a golf cart online, but skip the full tour package. That way, you can enjoy freedom with some structures and avoid long lines or las minutes issues.

--

There are other types of Ferries, but the XCaret ferry is well known and clean.

- The ride takes about 25 min more or less- there are open seating as well as air-conditioned cabins.

The boat arrives at the Northern tip of the Island, which is supposedly the most visited area featuring its main beaches and shopping area.

--

My daughter and I enjoyed the open seating area- while my parents and the rest of the family hid from the morning sun in the air-conditioned cabins.

5. Renting a Golf Cart

--

DO NOT FORGET TO BRING YOUR DRIVER LICENCE. Once we arrived at the port, we disembarked and were greeted by tour guides, golf cart salesmen, and must I say, it was quite overwhelming.
We knew we wanted to rent a golf cart once we arrived there, so we spoke with the first salesperson who priced us for the whole day with a large golf cart for 6 people.
We had done our research on Expedia and the price we paid for was the same as getting it on deck.

6. Enjoy your Freedom and have fun with your Rental Golf Cart

On the way to Punta Sur

--

Riding in a Golf Cart is fun. We headed to Punta Sur and drove around the island back to downtown where we had lunch in a local restaurant.

7. Eating at a local restaurant and the rest of our day at Isla Mujeres.

Compadres Restaurant at Isla Mujeres Downtown

Steak & French fries- He was so hungry

ShrimpTacos

Chips & Salsa

Beef Tacos

ComboTacos

Fresh Avocado! So good.

--

We were hungry- there are a plethora of restaurant options to choose from, and we chose this restaurant because the lady sold me on her fresh avocado.

--

After lunch- we walked a bit in downtown, it is a vibrant and colorful town. Since my parents cannot walk for too long, we headed back to the parking lot, and we headed towards the beach. Unfortunately, I do not have pictures to share, but we ended up renting a couple umbrellas and private seating managed by a private bar. We bathed in the Caribbean sea. We relaxed, swam and enjoyed some drinks. We had to return the golf cart by 5pm, and we ended up taking the Ferry back at 6pm.

--

We returned on land by 645pm- and drove back to our resort. If you don't have a rental car, you must figure out that piece of the puzzle if you decide to plan your day trip to Isla Mujeres on your own.
